  • Too Many Good Competitors to Consider This Had to return this to the installation folks twice. Bluetooth and touch screen freezes. Covered under warranty although I'm out a stereo for a week. Growing up Clarion was the top brand. Times have changed.
Over all ok After reading all the mixed reviews of the VX400 I went with the newest model out on the market the VX401. My husband installed the unit in our 04 Tahoe after buying an aftermarket wiring harness one thing we have found out is because of the On Star this requires an expensive harness we went with a lesser one because I have choose not to use the On Star feature with my truck. The features are simple and the menu screen is easy to nagivate. The intergrated microphone is great and BT works great!!! We are still in the process of linking the rear factory DVD to the front player I will update as we progress. If you are looking for navigation though go with another model this one has the capabilities but the expansion kit is very expensive.Over all this radio has done everything I have wanted I wanted a BT intergrated radio touch screen and a good radio. I don't have satellite radio or any high tech equipment I just wanted the cool simple things in a radio. I hope this helps. I am happy with my choice and will be enjoying the radio for awhile.
Unreliable. Not a good value for the $$$ I will never buy another Clarion deck after owning this unit. Sure the deck is a grand improvement on a stock deck but for the price I'd rather own a highend nondvd deck DVD being novelty in a sedan. This is the bargain barrel DVD touchscreen deck and it is not worth your time or money. The interface sucks and it is unreliable. I can't tear it a new arsehole though without giving it some positive feedback though so here are some pros.PROSSounds better than a stock deck. Builtin Bluetooth mic works well for phone calls. You can watch movies on it when it lets you. Inexpensive for a DVD touch deck.CONSAUDIO QUALITYThe first next thing you will notice is the lack of midrange frequency in your audio primarily where vocals are heard. You can turn up the bass and treble but there are no controls for Mid. So basically everything is thumpthump crashcrash and nothing in between. Songs I love to listen to at home and via headphones sound totally different and unremarkable through this clarion deck.
Do you like your movies Squashed or Cropped? The VX401 is for you! I bought the Clarion VX401 from Amazon in February 2011. Its predecessor model VX400 had lots of decent reviews on Amazon so I bought the 2011 model VX401 hoping it would be just as good or better. Our family car has headrestmounted monitors for the second row passengers. The VX401 seemed like a good device for queuing up movies for our pintsized passengers to watch in the rear. The user interface is woeful especially if you are trying to navigate the menus using the handheld IR remote control and the DVD aspect ratio choices are unforgivably bad. The VX401 is back in the box now and headed back to Amazon for a refund.Thankfully I did a trial setup of this unit on a workbench BEFORE bothering to install it in our vehicle. My workbench test of the VX401 was as follows. A portable 12volt power supply Jump & Carry JNC660 supplied power to the head unit through the Clarion wiring harness. The black Ground wire was connected to negative terminal the yellow BATT and red ACC wires were connected to the positive terminal. At that point the VX401 was powered on and the grassgreen BRAKE wire was connected to negative terminal to bypass the parking brake DVD interlock. I inserted a DVD with standard testpattern images to check aspect ratios. The La Ratatouille test pattern image on the Pixar T0Y ST0RY 3 DVD could not be displayed properly on this unit. There are only 2 aspect ratio settings on the VX401. Under the 169 setting the test image was squashed unnecessarily with too much letterbox at top and bottom. All 3 yellow rectangles in the test pattern were visible but a circular portion of the test pattern was displayed as a flattened ellipse. Under the 43 setting the circle looked OK but the entire test image was cropped only showing 2 of the three yellow rectangles in the test pattern. Indeed when the DVD movie was played the characters in the movie were Squashed letterboxed in 169 mode and Cropped in 43 mode.
If buying for BTAudio beware I purchased this item for two features. 1 Bluetooth audio streaming and 2 video inputs for my HKS CAMP 2. While the device technically fulfills both my needs it goes about doing it in the most nonsensical manner possible. Unlike other aftermarket and even OEM stereos that support BTAudio this unit does not have it listed as an input. It will do it but it requires you to navigate through several menus to access it after every boot up of the device. It will also discontinue playing your audio if you leave the bluetooth menu screen to do anything else with the headunit. If you're looking for something that will allow you to hop in your car and play your music from your phone or other bluetooth enabled media player with no hassle look elsewhere. After discovering this and finding no way around it I promptly pulled it out of the car and sent it back. I'm just glad Amazon was good about the return process.
